For entrepreneurs and small business owners, advertising is everything. Getting the name of your business or product into the world is incredibly important for growing your business venture, and one of the most effective ways of advertising is with a car wrap – no matter where you’re driving, your business is getting recognized. However, before choosing a car wrap, you need to consider some of the factors that might affect your car’s legality.
1. Local laws
Generally, car wraps are legal, however, every state and municipality has its own laws regarding mobile advertising, and some are stricter than others. Many cities ban moveable advertisements, and while these statutes generally refer to moving billboards, in some cases, they apply to vehicles as well.
In San Francisco, for example, the city bans advertisements on cars. Before wrapping your vehicle, you’ll need to check your local laws to make sure you can legally do so, or if you need to find alternate methods of advertising.
2. Homeowner’s Association
In addition to local laws, if you live in an area with a Homeowner’s Association, you may be restricted in the ways you can advertise. The Homeowner’s Association may not allow vehicles with advertising to be visibly parked, in order to maintain the integrity of the neighborhood. If you don’t have a dedicated garage, you’ll want to check to avoid the possibility of being towed.
3. Commercial vehicle registration
Once you’ve determined that it’s legal to wrap your car and your car is outfitted with a beautiful new vinyl wrap, you may need to re-register your vehicle. Since your car is being used to advertise your business, some states require it to be registered as a commercial vehicle instead of a passenger. You’ll need to ensure that your car is registered correctly in order to avoid any negative consequences.
